Is 2021 the year you’re going to make all of your home organization dreams come true with a brand new custom closet? We know there are so many different custom closet designs to choose from. The right design for you will depend not only on your organizational and storage needs, but your personal taste too.
Today, we’re going to share five big trends in closet designs for the year to keep in mind during the design process.
Custom Closet Designs for 2021: Top Trends
Of course, just because something is trendy, doesn’t mean it’s right for you! Who says you have to be like everyone else? While you may want to copy some of these trends and ideas right off the bat, you can also use them as a starting point for your own custom design!
Trend #1: Bold hardware
Some closets include plenty of hardware. From closet doors to drawer handles and other features, these are a great opportunity to make a statement. This year, we are seeing more homeowners opt for bold hardware choices in their closet. From brass or gold to blown glass, there’s a way to showcase your personality and taste with these features.
Trend #2: Put your collections on display
Whether it’s an impressive hat collection or a sneaker collection anyone would envy, they don’t need to be tucked away in drawers or behind cupboard doors. When you create a custom closet design, consider your own collections and how they can be put on display. Not only does this showcase the items you love, but it also makes them a lot easier to reach.
Trend #3: Level up your storage
Basic cubbies and shelves will always have a place in custom closet designs. But perhaps it’s time to consider unique storage options for your new closet.
Here are a few ideas:
- Hidden hampers
- Adjustable storage (this is particularly useful if you have growing children)
- Accessories storage, including jewelry drawers
- A folding station for laundry
- Hat shelves
Trend #4: Bright colors and natural elements
The walls in your walk-in closets provide you with another opportunity to showcase your style and implement your taste! While plain white walls work for some homeowners, more than ever, they’re opting for pops of color! There doesn’t tend to be a lot of empty wall space in a closet–that just means underutilized space! But the areas of the wall that are on display amplify the space when they’re a vibrant color instead of a neutral tone.
In addition to brighter paint colors, we’re also seeing more custom closet designs that incorporate natural elements. From stone countertops to wooden floors or handles, look for ways to incorporate natural elements into your space.
Trend #5: Focus on closet lighting
Rather than searching for your favorite sweater in a dimly-lit closet, incorporate beautiful and effective lighting into your new custom closet! Opting for detailed light fixtures rather than basic bulbs is increasingly popular. Not only does upgrading your lighting make your closet look more beautiful, but high-quality light fixtures make it easier to find things and help showcase your items.
Many closets don’t have any natural lighting. In that case, choosing the right lighting is even more important! If you are designing a whole new closet from scratch or building a home, you might even consider adding a skylight to your closet if windows aren’t an option. One of the best things about skylights in closets is that they don’t take up any wall space that could be used for storage.
