When you think of anything to do with trends and your closet, chances are your first thoughts go toward the items hanging in that closet. But today, we’re going to talk about another kind of trend—the design of your closet itself! That’s right, we’re going to tell you about the 2022 walk-in closet trends you need to know to ensure your new custom closet is (practically) timeless and well-designed.

Trend #1: Focusing on Your Why

Why are you designing a custom walk-in closet? Your answer likely has something to do with creating more flow and function in your home. But we want you to go beyond that when it comes to the “why” of your closet.

It’s helpful to get incredibly specific with your goals and the desired outcome of your closet. In fact, even with all of the other walk-in closet trends accounted for, if your closet doesn’t serve your overarching “why,” it isn’t reaching its full potential.

So, here are some helpful questions to ask to help you get to the heart of your why:

  • What are the challenges I’m experiencing with my current closet?
  • What is most important to me in my new closet?
  • How would my dream closet make me feel?
  • Which custom closet accessories would make my life and my home more organized?

Trend #2: Vibrant Colors

Vibrant colors aren’t for everyone. And understandably, you might be reluctant to incorporate them throughout your home. But adding a splash of vibrant color to your walk-in closet is an excellent way to liven up the space. Not to mention, it’s also on-trend for 2022!

Adding a bright, fun seat in your closet is one way to start. Alternatively, you could choose one wall to paint a fun color.

Here are some good reasons (beyond being trendy) for incorporating bright colors in your closet design:

Trend #4: Lights, Lights, and Lights

You can’t talk about 2022 walk-in closet trends without including lighting in the discussion! Lighting can make or break a walk-in closet, but there are several ways to incorporate smart lighting strategies in your design.

Overhead lighting: Elegant chandeliers look great in walk-in closets. They make the space look more valuable, stately, and impressive right off the bat. Just be sure to place the lighting between you and your clothing. Otherwise, it’ll cast a shadow on your belongings.

Natural lighting: If you’re lucky enough to have natural lighting in your closet, be sure to make the most of it! For example, focus on a design that emphasises this lighting and doesn’t block it. (Our designers can help with that!) If privacy is a concern, you can consider a modern frosted glass look so you still get the effect of having a window in the space. If you’re installing a walk-in closet on the top floor of your home, another option is adding a skylight. That way, you aren’t sacrificing any valuable wall space to get natural lighting.

Storage lighting: And of course, we can’t forget about storage lighting! For example, if you have cupboards and cabinets in your closet, custom lighting in these spaces will help you see what you’re looking for, even if the rest of the space isn’t lit up. Or, you can have small LED strip lights installed on your custom shoe rack to better display your impressive collection.

Trend #5: Dressing Tables

Functionality is where it’s at when it comes to 2022 walk-in closet trends. And one such way to achieve it is by adding a dressing table to your closet. Having an area in your closet to get ready serves a variety of purposes. For starters, it helps contain all of your belongings in one dedicated space. That way, everything you need is within reach and you can finish getting ready in your closet, rather than traveling from room to room. It also offers additional storage solutions, and simply makes the space more elegant.

Trend #6: Multi-Purpose

For our last of the 2022 walk-in closet trends, let’s talk about designing a multi-purpose closet. Until now, the purpose of your closet might have been storage, storage, and storage. But there are so many ways to get even more out of your closet!

Here are a few ideas for making a multi-purpose space in your custom closet:

  • Add a makeup station
  • Install a reading nook
  • Implement laundry sorting, folding, and ironing stations
  • Add storage for a variety of items, including seasonal items, in addition to clothing

Last year, we told you all about the walk-in closet trends to expect in 2021. Many of these trends are proving to be lasting, which makes them worth including in this post too!

Here are two additional trends to consider for your 2022 designs from our custom closet design trends 2021 post:

Maximize all storage space

“Whether you have a walk-in or reach-in closet, chances are there is storage space in your closet that is yet to be utilized.

For example, in a reach-in closet, many homeowners fail to realize they can use every inch of vertical space to make more room for their items. In a reach-in closet, this could mean adding a shelf at the very top of the closet. Then, this space can be used for storing seasonal items or other things you don’t need to use on a daily basis.

Alternatively, a walk-in closet offers several different options for increasing your storage space. One such example being using a combination of hanging storage and flat storage. Not only does this mean hanging rods for clothing, but adding hangers for belts, ties, and even jewelry is another custom closet design trend to consider for your home.”

Warm colors and natural elements

“This custom closet design trend doesn’t just apply to closets. In fact, it’s a good rule of thumb for your entire home: choose warm colors and natural elements for your space. These are among the hottest design trends for all of 2021, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere.

Choosing warmer paint colors like rich cream, soft gold, and warm taupe is a great place to start for your closet. Then, when it comes to choosing accessories for your closet, look for items with natural elements. This includes stone, leather, and wood. While they may be trendy right now, these elements actually have a timeless quality about them you’ll love for years to come.”

Important Note

Trends can be a helpful starting point for designing your dream closet. But trends should never be in charge of dictating all of your decisions for the very important space! Trends come and go, but functionality will always be the most important consideration for this custom space. Because even if your closet looks trendy, it doesn’t mean it’s working for you.

That’s why it’s important to work with experienced designers who can help you create a space that’s not only beautiful, but suits your needs as a homeowner too!
